Thomas Frank Barton faculty papers, 1913-1980.

This collection consists of Thomas Frank Barton's papers accumulated while he was a professor and department head at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and papers relating to Southern Illinois University Carbondale collected after his resignation. A large portion of the correspondence relates to Barton's dissatisfactions with George K. Plochmann's book, "The Ordeal of Southern Illinois University", written in 1957. Barton thought Plochmann had misrepresented the facts about the Department of Geography and Geology. There are only a few letters after Barton's tenure at Southern Illinois University Carbondale until Barton began writing of his displeasure with the book in 1977. The collection also contains a large number of papers of the Department and Southern Illinois University Carbondale including departmental reports from 1938-1947, class notes, and memoranda. There are many reports, publications, notes, and news clippings concerning geography and geology surveys, studies, and projects in Illinois conducted during the 1930s and 1940s. These include information on the Crab Orchard Project conducted during the 1930s, news clippings and other information on discoveries of oil deposits in southern Illinois during the 1930s, and projects and studies conducted during World War II. Also included are some of Barton's articles and drafts of articles and speeches written while he was at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, news clippings concerning Barton, and other papers related to his career.
