He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy at Columbia University in 1936 and completed his doctorate in Philosophy with honors in 1950 at the University of Chicago. Thomas F. Barton was a professor in the Department of Geography and Geology at Southern Illinois University from 1935-1947, serving as head of the department from 1936-1947. After leaving Southern Illinois University, he accepted positions at both Indiana University, Bloomington, and Prasanmit University in Bangkok.
